The BIG Issues

The BIG Issues

Securing land for these animals and monitoring their progress is of highest priority!

With Phase One of the Sudbury Elk Restoration's goals successfully behind us, we enter Phase Two with a number of issues demanding attention. Phase Two is aimed at securing a safe habitat for these majestic animals and monitoring their progress.

A secure habitat must contain proper food, shelter, and safety to be called secure. The Burwash/French River area of Northern Ontario is supplying much of the first two items on that list. It's up to us to make certain of the third!

Some of the issues facing the new elk herd include the dangers of

  • winter kill,
  • predation,
  • drowning,
  • road and train track kills,
  • highway expansion,
  • hunting/poaching,
  • healthy food supply,
  • disease,
  • land development

Second to this vital goal is that of monitoring the animals we have now and making sure their environment is meeting their needs. Ongoing tracking of the animals and research into their lives is desperately important to ensure we do not lose the animals for future generations.
