What Massage Does
Therapeutic massage is a holistic
therapy that has a profound effect on one's health, with positive
effects on both body and mind. To help bodies heal themselves and to
increase health and well being is its goal. It is a practice using a
variety of physical methods to apply fixed or movable pressure,
causing movement or holding the body.
Massage therapist mainly use their
hands, but sometimes they will utilize their forearms, elbows, and
or feet. The sense of touch is the basic element of massage therapy,
combining science, art, learned techniques and just the right amount
of pressure. Locating areas of tension and other soft tissue
problems with touch, conveys a sense of caring and is an important
part of the healing component.
Overworked muscles cause waste
products such as lactic acid, which can accumulate in the muscle,
causing soreness, stiffness, and even muscle spasm. Improving
circulation with massage will increase blood flow and bring fresh
oxygen to body tissues. This can assist to eliminate waste products,
speed healing of injuries, and improve recuperation from disease.
Promoting general well being,
enhancing self-esteem, spurring the circulatory system to benefit
blood pressure, muscle tone, skin tone, digestion and boosting
immune systems can be accomplished by therapeutic massage. Also,
massage increases the flow of lymph and stimulation of nerve
receptors. Incorporated into many health systems, different massage
techniques have been developed and included into a variety of
harmonizing therapies.
