Positive Re-Direction
Positive re-direction in younger children
can be tough even for the most experienced parent or caregiver.
Depending on the child’s behavior patterns, re-direction maybe very easy
or it can be a difficult and demanding process.
During my employment years at a daycare center, I and co-workers were
given this ‘magic list’ to consider. This list was presented to us by a
child physiologist that worked with the staff when we encountered a
behavior problem child.
Keep in mind that your child doesn’t necessarily have to be a behavior
problem child.
“THE MAGIC LIST”
See the trouble about to happen
Give gentle reminders
Distract to a positive model
Provide some humor to the situation
Offer other choices
Give praise or compliments
Offer encouragement
Overlook the small stuff
Ignore the provocations
Reconsider the situation
Point out the natural or logical consequences
Give renewal time
Arrange discussion among the children or the adult depending on the
situation
Even if you try a few of the ideas from this list, with a little
persistence, you will have a more happy and confident child.
