Healing yourself through Art
Imagine yourself driving in your car.. its been a very difficult day at
work and you feel down on yourself – fed up, angry, frustrated. You
reach out and turn on the radio and the speakers give your ears a treat!
Its that song, the one that always makes you feel better, helps to shake
of the dust off the day and bring a smile to your face or maybe even
dance. Sometimes all it takes is a quick creative moment to alter your
train of thought and bring positive energy back to you.
Art is not just a tube of paint and a paint brush – its music, poetry,
words, theatre, expression, or it could be as simple as going into the
garden and moving the stones around in a pattern that you find soothing.
All you have to do is be willing to tap into your own creative space –
even the most structured person can find joy in creation.
How does this heal? When you begin to create your body energy changes
and your brain waves begin to tell your stress levels to lower. You
become more relaxed and attuned to your thoughts, your surroundings and
the creative flows you are releasing. Studies have been made that prove
that the arts actually help immune systems, emotional issues and create
a sense of well being. You are brought into your personal inner world of
visions, creative imagery and it helps to balance from within.
The first step is to simply allow your-self to be creative. That in
itself is sometimes difficult as we find ourselves aligned to the daily
grind of life. But if you can take time each day to be in touch with
this side of your mind it can be of beneficial nature. One does not need
an expensive studio or room – you can create by using a lawn chair in
the backyard or while sitting on a public beach or even while using your
computer.
A crucial thing to be aware of and understand is that you are not
expected to create a masterpiece. This is not about perfection or what
others may see, its about allowing your mind to go beyond daily stresses
and in itself release built up negative energy. Let go and turn up the
radio and dance (even it its 3am), pick up a pencil and make the first
line on paper, wisk the paint across the canvass or type your thoughts
on your keyboard.
For those who are more structured in life and can’t imagine picking up
pencils or paints, you can look to other directions to be creative.
There are wonderful programs that you can download (one in particular
called Ultra Fractal) that will allow you to be creative in a structured
mathematical environment. (Its worth looking at).
You can join a theatre group and express yourself through actions or
take creative courses at school. There are things you can do in groups
as well as on your own and all you have to do is be open to trying
something new.
Be brave and step out of the normal day to day grind and touch your
creative side. Even if you just pick up an etch-a-sketch the next time
you walk through Zellers and give the dials a few turns before you
leave, I’ll bet you’ll get a little wave of joy from it. And I’m willing
to wager that for a short while the daily doldrums just blew away in the
breeze.
