Latchford
began as a formal settlement when it was reached by the Temiskaming
and Northern Ontario Railway in 1902. One of the many benefits of
establishing a community in this particular area were the tremendous
stands of lumber that were accessible from the waters of the
Montreal River and the importance of that watershed as a
transportation link into the deep interior.
Latchford,
the gateway to the James Bay Frontier is a great place to start your
vacation. In
addition to the usual outdoor enticements, Latchford
boasts a history which comes to life in many tourist attractions
such as the Montreal River Heritage Tours, the House of Memories
Museum and the Ontario Logger's Hall of Fame.
In 1994, the Ontario Loggers Hall of
Fame, H style bunkhouse and cookery, and a turn of the century
sawmill opened in 1994. The
following year, an icehouse and blacksmith shop was added.
Visitors
can relive the past during the Heritage Logging Days Festivals where
residents recreate the life of a 1930 logging and sawmill operation.
