The Towns and Cities
of Northern Ontario
Englehart Ontario- James Bay Frontier
When traveling north along the Trans
Canada Highway, a perfect pit stop between North Bay and Timmins is
one of Ontario’s friendliest and cleanest small Northern Ontario
towns: Englehart. The Great fire of 1922 which devastated many
communities was stopped on the doorstep of Englehart. Many of the
survivors were temporarily housed in T&NO rail cars. Grant Forest
Product, the world's largest Oriented Strand Board (wafer board)
manufacture, is located in Englehart.
Kap Kig Iwan (Ojibway for "water running over the edge”) Park (over
325 hectares of land) is located just outside of the town. When one
has the opportunity to view the park's major attraction - the high
falls of the Englehart River there is little doubt that the park is
well named. Kap Kig Iwan offers the outdoor enthusiast a relaxed,
back to nature atmosphere while still affording some essential
comforts. Evidence of more than two billion years of the planet's
history can be seen in the walls and floors of the Englehart River
Valley.
Hikers can enjoy a trail that wraps its way approximately 6 km along
the steep valley slopes and banks of the Englehart River, linking
Englehart to Kap Kig Iwan Park. This trail takes about one and a
half hours of walking to complete.
Hunting in the area is excellent and many facilities exist to assist
sportsmen in their gaming adventure. Big game hunting for deer,
moose and bear attract thousands of hunters to the area each year.
Install yourself on one of the many area lakes and fish for walleye,
brook trout, lake trout, small mouth bass, northern pike, or perch.
Go for the day or set up a camp by a lake
In the winter, miles of well groomed snowmobile trails surround the
area. The Club Echo trail system connects to all the trails in the
area. Motels, lodges, restaurants, gas stations, grocery stores,
hotels and a liquor store are all located close to the trails.
Englehart is a snowmobile friendly town, allowing snowmobile access
on all town streets.
As a pit stop or a holiday setting, you’ll enjoy this small friendly
clean community.
