Baladi Belly
Dance and Roma Gypsy Dance in the Greater Sudbury, Ontario
Lucie De La Fontaine
Lucie De La Fontaine is a lovely woman
with stunning eyes and a glowing smile. She is somewhat reserved until
you get to know her but watching her warm up a class one can't help but
think “she has music in her soul.” Once the music starts she is bubbly,
smiling, and lively. Her passion for dance is obvious… and contagious.
Her talent as a dancer is nothing short
of phenomenal and the awed and appreciative cries from an audience
watching her perform is an entertaining part of getting to see her
dance.
I might add she is an outstanding
teacher! Lucie has a sharp eye for detail and a deep understanding and
empathy for the obstacles each student may be facing personally, either
physical or metal. She has the ability to see what is needed and find a
way to help her students push past their own physical limitations. (I
speak first hand as one of her more “challenging” students.)

Lucie De La Fontaine has over 25 years of
dance experience and studied Oriental Dance in Paris, New York, Egypt,
Montreal, and Colorado. For 14 years she worked as professional dancer,
instructor, and choreographer in Quebec before moving to Northern
Ontario and bringing her hypnotic style to enlighten our area.
In Quebec she became well known for
daring innovation and creativity. Lucie was the first to create and
teach Raks Al Balas (water jug dance), a traditional Turkish candelabra
dance, Dance of the Seven Veils, and sword dances. Some of her students
have gone on to become our country’s best performers and instructors
themselves.
She has taught workshops in Quebec,
Ontario, and Mexico and has appeared over 50 times on television. She is
a certified Hatha Yoga instructor, and trained with a practicing midwife
in prenatal health. She has taught “heath dance” in Mexico, and
continues to pursue her own education in her never ending pursuit of
perfection in dance.
In 2000 Lucie opened the National Baladi
School in Greater Sudbury. The school offers classes from September
through June in Baladi belly dance, Gypsy dance, African dance, and
yoga. She also runs summer workshops for such things as choreography,
costume design and creation, and dancing with Isis wings. She produces
annual dance shows and a large bi-annual production to consistently
packed houses.
She also heads a dance troupe available
to dance at private functions.
