From Peru...

Weavings are a traditional Peruvian art form, a colourful way to depict both everyday life and celebrations.  SELFHELP Crafts imports four different types:

Open weave wool weavings feature traditional designs and are coloured with natural dyes - reds and purples form cactus, browns from tree bark, blues and grays from fruit

Reversible wool tapestries are made by men in the department of Ayacucho, at the foothills of the Andes.  Arpillera wall hangings are appliquéd, quilted and adorned with numerous stuffed figures to illustrate scenes from village life.  No two are alike

Coiled wool weavings originate in San Pedro de Cajas, a highland town in the department of Huancayo.  In this process, the raw sheep's wool is spun, dyed and then coiled to the desired length by rolling it between two flat surfaces before it is loomed.

Most Peruvian crafts are made in the highlands of the Andes, primarily by Quechua Indians, descendants of the Incas.  Over the past 20 years, these traditional creations have enjoyed a surge in popularity that has greatly increased the self-esteem of their producers
